Historical Background:
Uttar Pradesh might look modernized in today’s times but the State dates back to as old as 4000 years. With important rivers such as the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati cutting through this State, early settlement took place due to the fertile lands. To yield power over Northern parts of India, it was essential to have control over Uttar Pradesh and thus the rulers attached special importance to this region. This part of India has been ruled by some of the most powerful dynasties such as the Mauryas, Nandas, Kushan, Magadh, Rashtrakuta, and eventually the Mughal Empire.
Language and Culture:
Many refer to this State as the Hindi heartland and that is due to the prominence of some of the finest Hindi writers from this region such as Surdas, Vishnu Sharma, Malik Mohamad Jayasi and some of the modern authors like Jaishankar Prasad and Prem Chand. While Hindi is the majorly spoken language in Uttar Pradesh, people also speak Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Bundeli, Braj, and English. In this part of India, the famous dance form called Kathak is performed.
Popular Attractions in the State:
As the fourth largest state in the country, Uttar Pradesh has a lot to offer to the tourists. According to the Hindu religion, the place is a spiritual capital with regions such as Varanasi, Mathura, Ayodhya, and Allahabad. These are some of the major tourist attractions as well as the pilgrimage activities that take place. One of the most important attractions in Uttar Pradesh is the Taj Mahal in Agra which is also among the Seven Wonders of the World. While in Agra, also visit Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort. Varanasi and Vrindavan are must-visit places for a unique experience. Many tourists crowd Allahabad during the Kumbh Mela which is a once in 12-years event. You could also take a tour to Lucknow and experience some Mughal architecture and food strewn through this ancient city. You can also visit places such as the National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary and the Dudhwa National Park for some natural beauty. Another amazing place for spiritual salvation is Sravasti which is important to three religions, Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. For the shopping enthusiasts, souvenirs such as the Banarasi sarees, handicraft items, sweets, and perfumes are worth taking home. Do munch on some of the local delicacies such as kebabs and rabri for a blissful experience.
Transportation:
As an important State in North India, Uttar Pradesh has four airports which are located in Varanasi, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow. Lucknow, which is also the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has excellent connectivity via road to major Indian cities such as Kolkata and Delhi. Indian Railways also operates all through this State with some of the major junctions being located in Lucknow, Varanasi, Allahabad, Agra, etc.
Best Time to Visit:
The summer season in Uttar Pradesh is unpleasant with temperatures soaring high and increasing the risk of sunstroke. So it is best to visit from October to March. However, if you want to attend a particular festival then the timings of the same have to be taken into account.
