Historical Background
On November 1st, 1980, Waynad was formed as the 12th district of Kerala. According to the tribals who live in his area, one can divide the name Wayanad as “Vayal,” which means paddy, and “Nadu,” which means land.
Therefore, Waynad, when translated, means the land of paddy fields. It is believed that the forests of Wayanad had human settlements almost 1000 years before Christ. Archaeologists have found pieces of evidence, including cave paintings, to the New Stone Age civilization in these forests.
The actual historical records of this place date back to the 18th century, when the district was ruled by the Veda Dynasty. It was then ruled by the Kottayam royal dynasty, Hyder Ali, and also the British Raj.
When the British took over Wayanad, the plateau was open for tea plantations and the cultivation of various cash crops.
