Varkala beach is set about 10 km away from the calm and quiet hamlet of Varkala in Kerala. The beach is also famous as Papanasam Beach and is a beautiful stretch of sand notable for its seclusion, unlike other commercial beaches of the Kerala region. The backdrop of the Arabian Sea against the cliffs of Kerala comes out as a unique one since we cannot find these sedimentary formation peaks anywhere in the flat coastline of Kerala.
Further, Varkala beach is divided into two parts. Tourists love the northern part right at the bottom of the cliff that is famous for its natural mineral spring. However, if you are spiritual, the southern part lies at the end of the road leading from Janardhana Swamy Temple, and Hindus believe it to be sacred.
People believe that the water of the beach is medicinal and has curative properties. Local people and tourists dip in the holy water to cleanse all the sins and the body of impurities. Thus the name Papanasam Beach translates to 'Destroyer of Sins.'
Sunsets at the Varkala Beach are exceptionally pristine and call for a walk along the beach. In addition, if you love seafood, then this place is a paradise for you. The eating joints nearby offer some of India's best mouth-watering and affordable food.
