Anjengo Fort or Anchuthengu Fort is one of the prime attractions of Varkala, standing at a distance of 12 km from Varkala. When the British East India Company selected Anjengo to initiate their first trade settlement in Kerala, they built the fort in 1965. The word 'Anjuthengu' means 'five coconut palms,' which has a beautiful and pristine beach.
This fort is a testimony to many historical events and links referred to the colonial rule in Varkala. Walking around the walls of the fort gives a nice view. It is believed that the Anjengo Fort was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. According to the residents, the name Anjengo owes its birth to a small land area with five coconut trees, which was given on rent to the British East India Company by the Queen of Attingal for trading.
