Ujjain is the historical city in the Malwa region of Central India. It is located on the Eastern Banks of River Kshipra and very significant because of its mention in the Indian epic, the Mahabharata.
Ujjain: Historical Background
Ujjain, which was once known as Ujjayni is counted among the seven sacred cities of the Hindus. It was once the capital of the Avanti Kingdom and was of great interest to Hindu geographers right from 4th century BC. It is in this city that Lord Krishna was tutored by Maharshi Sandipani.
The history of Ujjain is quite distinguished. The earliest references are from the time Gautama Buddha when it was known as Avantika. This is where Emperor Ashoka resided when he was the viceroy of the great Mauryan Empire. The city came under the rule of several significant dynasties like the Sungas, the Satavahanas and even the Guptas. It even came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire during Emperor Akbar’s reign.
Ujjain was the centre of mathematics and astronomy as well. It is from this place that Mathematicians like Brahmagupta and Varahamira emerged.

Ujjain is home to many temples that bear immense significance for the Hindus. The temple of Mahakaleshwar where one of the 12 jyothirlingams of India is located, for instance, is revered by many Hindus. Besides that, there are important places of worship like the Harsidhi Temple, The Mangalnath temple, The Kal Bhairav Temple and the Chintaman Ganesh Temple.
For those who are interested in history and culture, there are several monuments that bear testament to the glorious past of Ujjain. The throne of King Vikramadtya, for instance, has still been preserved. Besides that, tourists can also enjoy natural wonders like the Bharthari caves that are steeped in legends and stories.
Once in twelve years, Ujjain hosts India’s biggest cultural and spiritual congregation, the Kumbh Mela. Besides that, one can witness a host of folk art forms in Ujjain. The primary languages spoken here are Hindi and Malvi.

Ujjain presents tropical climatic conditions. This means that the colder months, between November to April are the best time to visit.
