Rameswaram

Rameswaram is a town in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, situated on Pamban Island, separated from the mainland by a channel. It is one of the holiest places for Hindus, and is visited by millions each year.

Historical Significance

Rameswaram, being an important transit point en route to Sri Lanka, has always been strategically important. It was ruled by the Cholas, Pandyas and then Vijaynagar.

It was also invaded and captured by Muslim rulers like Khilji and the Nawab of Arcot before its annexation to Madras Presidency under British rule.

The Ramanathaswamy temple, built in the 7^th century and renovated in the 12^thcentury  is the most famous historic monument and is thronged by devotees in millions. This is one of the 12 Jyothirlinga shrines of India where Shiva is worshipped as a pillar of light.

There are 24 important ‘teertha’s in and around the city, and bathing in these water bodies is very much coveted by pilgrims. There are also other temples dedicated to Lord Ram,making this a very holy and sacred place for Hindus.

Culture

Rameswaram is essentially a temple town and the life and culture revolves around the main temples and the pilgrims who visit. Most people are either directly or indirectly engaged in tourism. A small section of fisherman is Christian, and the St. Anthony’s church is famous.

Ram Navami, Pongal, Deepavali, Sivaratri and the Tamil New Year (mid-April) are the main festivals celebrated here.

Idli-sambhar, vada, tairsadam re some of the local delicacies.
