Historical Background
Nilgiri was earlier ruled by the Ganga kings followed by the Hoysala kings, particularly Vishnuvardhana who captured Wynad and Nilgiri in 11th Century. Tipu Sultan was the first emperor who extended his border by constructing a hideout cave like structure in Nilgiri.
In 1799, it comes under the possession of East India Company when Tipu Sultan signed a treaty with them. Getting impressed by the exotic beauty and greenery of the place, Britishers name this place as Queen of Hill Stations.
