Mumbai is one of the metropolitan cities of India and capital of Maharashtra. It is the economic powerhouse of India and it lies on the south west part of the country. It is also known as the “City of Dreams” as it is the centre of India’s huge Hindi film industry. Most of the legends of Indian cinema reside in Mumbai. Mumbai is basically built on seven islands namely Bombay Island, parel, mazagaon, mahim, colaba, Worli and old woman’s Island. In the third century BC, these islands were the part of Maurya Empire, ruled by the Buddhist emperor, Ashoka of Magadha. The city was at that time was known as Hepatanesia.
In 1526, the Mughal emperors ruled the Indian subcontinent and signed the treaty of Bassein with the Portuguese who got actively involved in the foundation and growth of their Roman Catholic religious orders in Bombay (Mumbai).
In 1687, these islands were leased to British East India Company and they transfer their headquarters from Surat to Bombay. They city became the headquarters of Bombay Presidency and after Indian Independence in 1947, it became a State.

Cricket is the most popular sport and the players of this state represent Ranji trophy and won 40 titles, which is the highest so far by any state.

Climate and best time to visit
Normally the climate of the state is humid and dry. June to September is the monsoon months with high humidity. In winters the minimum temperature reaches up to 10 degrees while in summers it goes to 40degrees maximum. The best time for to visit this place for sightseeing is between October to March.
