Matheran

A hill station in Raigarh, Maharashtra, Matheran is a little jewel in the crown of Maharashtra’s tourism industry. It is located at an altitude of at an altitude of about 2,625 feet above sea level, on the Western Ghats range. Additionally, it is one of the most beautiful hill stations consisting of 28 points, two lakes, two parks, four prominent worship places, and a racecourse.

History of Matheran

Hugh Poyntz Malet discovered this nature-loving place. He was district collector of Thane, in May 1850. But the foundations of Matheran as a future hill station were laid down by Governor of Bombay, Lord Elphinstone. It is a fantastic place to beat the heat in the summer.

Union Environment Ministry has declared Matheran an eco-sensitive region by Union Environment Ministry. This is among the few places where private vehicles are not allowed, making it a quiet and peaceful place.

Culture of Matheran

Though there are lots of Parsi bungalows in Matheran, the root culture is Marathi. People belonging to this place speak Marathi, Hindi, and English. The majority of people are from Hindu and Muslim communities. All the religious festivals are celebrated with equal enthusiasm.

Interestingly, roads in Matheran are not metallic; but are made from red laterite earth. Also, beautiful old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran.

Matheran is contributing reasonable revenue to the tourism of Maharashtra, which aids in the development of better infrastructural facilities for the tourists as well as local residents.

Matheran Municipal Council, along with Bhabh atomic plant, has laid the foundation of the BARC NI Sargruna Biogas Plant for biodegradable processing waste generated in the premises of the municipal council at Matheran. They recycle waste and will add to the value of technology from an environmental angle. Thus making this place environment-friendly and free of pollution.

Climate and Best Time To Visit Matheran

Since the city lies in an elevated region, it is the best place to visit during summers. Tourists can enjoy a calmer and less humid climate compared to other parts of the state. Temperatures range from 32 °C (90 °F) to 16 °C (61 °F). The best time for visiting the place is from October to May. People who love to go for rainy outings can go there in July and August.

Shopping and Food Places

Matheran offers a tiny wonder in the case of food varieties. Apart from Maharashtrian cuisine, experiment with Punjabi, Moghlai, and Chinese menus in many restaurants in the town. One must try, and the famous sweet of the place is Chikki. Do not miss Vada Paav and authentic varieties of kebab. When tired and thirsty, sip some refreshing Kokum Sharbat. Liquor is available but only in some restaurants.
