Kovalam came attention of holiday seekers in the 1920s after Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore constructed the popular beach resort, Halcyon Castle.
The place was made popular as a tourist destination by the Maharaja of Travancore thereafter. The beach town attracted many European travelers who came here on their own and also as guests of the Royals of Travancore.
With the arrival of Hippies who arrived here in masses while en route the Hippie Trial, Kovalam became one of the most popular destinations for tourists. After this, Kovalam transformed into a popular tourist spot from being a simple fishing town.
