Kanyakumari

Located at the Southern-most tip of India, Kanyakumari is one of the most serene beaches in India. Because of its religious and spiritual significance, the city attracts tourists who come here for various reasons.

Kanyakumari: Historical significance

The temple of Kanyakumari or Kumari Amman gives the town its name. On the shores of the Lacadive Sea stands her temple which is considered very significant by the Hindus.

According to the records by Greco-Roman geographer Ptolemy, Kanyakumari was the hub of pearl fishery. Besides that, it was also an important center for the commercial relations between India and Alexandria. The town was ruled by many emperors like the Pandiyas and the Cheras.

Legend has it that when Lord Hanuman was carrying the mountain that bore the medicinal herb, Sanjeevani, a piece of land broke off and fell from it.  This is believed to be the famous Maruntnuvaz Malai or the medicinal hill which is located about 7 kms from Kanyakumari.

Kanyakumari is famous for the temple located on its shores. In addition to that, there is also a serene meditation chamber that is popular among tourists globally.

The nose ring on the statue of this temple shines so brightly that local guides vouch that it still serves as a lighthouse for boats and ships.

Located right in the middle of the sea is a giant statue of Thiruvalluvar, a legendary Tamil poet. The Vivekanada rock memorial is also a place of interest as it is believed that in that very spot Swami Vivekananda meditated for three days.

For devotees to experience the calming effect of meditation, a dhyan mandir has also been built there.

The beautiful sunrise and sunset at Kanyakumari form the perfect setting for couples on a romantic getaway. The serene beaches only add to the entire spellbinding effect.

Kanyakumari displays typical Tamil Culture with importance given to Indian Classical music and dance. Besides that, a lot of emphasis is laid upon Tamil Literature and poetry as well. The official language in the region is Tamil.

The best time to visit the place is between November and February when the temperatures are low and also the chances of rainfall are low.
