Coorg is a hilly district in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Known as Kodagu locally, its headquarters are Madikeri (Mercara anglicised).
Historical Background
The first inhabitants were the Kodavas, a brave warrior clan who were also farmers. Traditionally, an outsider was appointed to administer the region, and answer to the chiefs. Being very rich in natural resources, it was invaded unsuccessfully several times by Hyder Ali and Tippu.

Coorg is a beautiful hill station with picturesque scenery. The tranquillity and natural beauty make it a favourite honeymoon destination.
It is replete with waterfalls, variety of greenery and many plantations. Three wildlife sanctuaries and a national park in the region are home to several wildlife species like the tiger, deer, elephants, sambar, gaur, leopard and more.
Several adventure sports and outdoor activities like trekking, river rafting, camping, fishing, quad biking and so on beckon adventure and nature lovers to this charming hill station.
Coorg’s Culture
Coorg is populated by the ethnic Kodavas; in addition, there are Heggades and Gowdas, Muslims, and several indigenous tribes living in the region.
Native Coorgis are mainly Kshatriyas, or warriors, and worship arms. Interestingly, the ethnic population is polytheistic, and they worship a number of deities.
The attire of Coorgis is unique. The women wear Sarees with pleats in the back and fix the pallu with a brooch. The men wear a full-sleeved white shirt under a long half sleeved coat, Kupya and a waist sash called Chale. They tuck ornamental daggers and knives into it, to complete the warrior look.
They are Sport enthusiasts and Hockey is the most popular, with men, women and children participating.
Kodava and Kannad are the main languages; Kalipodhu, Puttari, and Kaveri Sankraman are the popular festivals.
Current Scenario
Coorg has a high literacy rate and a higher female population. Coffee, spices, and tourism rake in the money for this region. Eco tourism, walking tours, and home-stays are gaining popularity and are encouraged by the Government.

Climate here is pleasant throughout the year; however best time to visit is October-April.
