Chennai, known earlier as Madras, is the capital of Tamil Nadu and one of the four metros of India.
It was also called Chennaipattinam and Madraspattinam earlier. The city is on the Coromandel Coast, along the Bay of Bengal.
Historical Background
The region around Chennai has seen the rule of the Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas and the Vijaynagar Empire. In the 16th-17th centuries, came the Portuguese and the Dutch.
The British followed in 1639 and built the St. George Fort. It was briefly captured by the French but the British won it back and developed it as a naval base and administrative centre.

It is a very densely populated city, and has people from all four South Indian states. The Government is taking steps to provide shelter to the homeless. Roads have also been improved with flyovers and grade separators.
