It is a port city located in the south east coast of India. It is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh and is also known as ‘the jewel of the East Coast’. Some people have also named this city as the ‘city of destiny’ or ‘Goa of the east’. The city is also known as Vizag.

Historical Background

In Ramayana, it is mentioned that Lord Rama and Lakshman roamed here in search of Sita. As said in Mahabharata, Bheem killed evil demon Bakasur at a place near Visakhapatnam.

The city was a part of Kalingas under King Ashoka with Buddhism prevailing in majority at that time. Later on this city was also ruled by the Vengi, Chalukya, Chola and Mughal Emperors. In 1765, this city came under the control of The East India Company who developed this place and made it a major trading centre.

A city of ports, beaches, business hub and honeymoon destination

The city is famous for its sandalwood sculptures and pearls. Tourists do a lot of shopping of the handicrafts items. Followers of Lord Buddha make a beeline to this city to visit Buddhist temples.

This place is also a great business hub for trading purposes. Lot of minerals and iron ore are exported to other parts of the country with the presence of ports in the city.

Beaches are also a source of attraction for the tourists and honeymoon couples. They really enjoy the exotic beauty of the place.


People living in this place are mostly Hindus. Telugu is the common language spoken by the people. The people of Visakhapatnam celebrate their festivals with great enthusiasm. The major festival is the Visakha Utsav which is organized by the Tourism Department. It is a four day festival held in January which throws light on the culture and lifestyle of the city. Another major festival which is celebrated here is Chandanotsavam.

Current Scenario

Visakhatnam is growing at a very fast pace economically as well as demographically. The place has become a major business hub for most of the corporate companies trading overseas. The Visakhaptnam port is the largest in the country contributing to the development of petroleum, steel and fertilizer industries. This city hosts the headquarters of various naval offices as well as Dredging Corporation of India.

The Andhra pradesh Government is providing infrastructure to IT and banking firms to open their offices in Visakhapatnam which will generate more employment opportunities and will improve the standard of living of the people.

Visakhaptnam is also famous for its quality education. There are a number of primary schools and colleges along with missionary schools which offers quality education to the future of the country.

Climate and best time to visit

Vishakhaptnam experiences a tropical climate with little variations in temperature. Being located on the Bay of Bengal, humidity is very high throughout the year. The best time to visit this place is between November to February as the climate is moderate at that time.
