Situated on the Palar River, the historic city of Vellore (meaning city of Spears) in Tamil Nadu is now most well known for its hospital, CMC. It is also known as the Fort City.

Historical Significance

Vellore was ruled by Pallavas, Cholas (who ruled for over four centuries), Vijaynagar Empire, Rashtrakutas and Carnatic Nawab till the fall of the Mughal Empire. It eventually went to the British. Early Chola inscriptions suggest that it was founded in the 9th century at least.
