Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala state and is situated on the southwestern tip of India. Named after AnanthaPadmanabha (RecliningVishnu) it is today Kerala’s largest city and its IT hub.

Historical Significance

It was renowned from very ancient times as a trading centre for spices ivory and sandalwood. Modern Thiruvananthapuram rose to prominence under MarthandaVarma’s rule when it was made capital of Travancore in 1745. The mid nineteenth century saw the establishment of modern institutions like schools and museum. It was never under direct British control yet was important in the freedom struggle. There was widespread social reform in the mid 1930s.

People here are art and music lovers, and several concerts and cultural activities are conducted year round, reaching a peak during Onam.

Food is spicy and coconut is the main ingredient. Elasadya (rice meals on bananaleaf) is not to be missed.

Traditional handicrafts are also available in shops and on the streets.
