Formerly known as Simla, Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, located in North India. In 1864, Britishers declared it as the summer capital of India. Shimla is a hub for India’s tourism sector.

Historical Background

Shimla, along with other cities was invaded by a king of Nepal, Prithvi Narayan Shah. After his war with the British East India Company, the place came under the control of Britishers.

The people of Shimla are called Shimlaites. Being a cosmopolitan city, different cultural festivals are celebrated here with great enthusiasm; famous is the Shimla Summer festival. During this festival, singers from various parts of the country come here and exhibit their talents. It has markets which are famous for its souvenirs and crafts made from wood.

The majority of Shimla’s population consists of natives of Himachal Pradesh, Pahari. The main languages spoken are Hindi and Punjabi as Hinduism is the main religion followed by people of Shimla.

Shimla is growing at a fast pace. The majority of revenue comes from the tourism industry which generates lot of employment opportunities to the people residing there.

Government is also trying to promote IT and technology for the growth and promotion of the state. Apart from this education system is also showing a mark of improvement. It has the area’s largest healthcare centre, hosting a medical college and four major hospitals. The city aims to make Shimla an attractive Health tourism spot.

Climate and best time to visit Shimla

The climate of Shimla is cool during winters and warm in summers. Winters are best to enjoy snowfall, while summers are preferred to enjoy the scenic beauty of the place. September to June are considered to be the best months to visit Shimla.
