A place in South India, it was formerly known as Pondicherry. It is a Union territory of India formed out of four enclaves of former French India. In Tamil, Puducherry means “New Town”. The territory name Pondicherry was changed to Puducherry in the year 2006.
This city is also known as “The French Riviera of the East” as roots of French culture are still present here.
About 50 years ago, this Union Territory of ‘Pondy’ was under the control of the French. Therefore, the city’s whole architecture is based on French pattern with neat sectors and perpendicular streets.
A religious city with great art and culture
Puducherry is one of the famous tourist spots for Indian as well as International tourists. The city is famous for its beaches where you can go, relax and enjoy the natural beauty.

This state has Indian as well as non Indian residents with French passports. This place also has a French Consulate and other cultural organizations. A French Medium school system is also established here under the control of French Minister of National Education.
The official languages which are spoken here are Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and French. The status of the same varies by district. English is also a mode of communication among people with different religion and culture.
The Gross State Domestic product of Puducherry is growing at a very fast pace which will provide better job opportunities to the people and improve their standard of living. The Railways also play a vital role in the speedy economic growth. Government has also sanctioned more funds to put more railway pipelines in Puducherry.
The Pondicherry Airport has also been extended by the Government so that air services can be gradually improved. A MOU has already been signed with Airport Authorities of India for this purpose.
As far as education is concerned, this place has almost hundred percent literacy rate with quality education offered by Pondicherry University and much more. State Government is also taking step in this regard to improve the infrastructural facilities of the educational institutions.
Climate and best time to visit
Pondicherry is hot and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit this place is between October to March because at that time the weather is quite pleasant being winters are there and it is an ideal time for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
