Nalanda is an ancient city situated to the south east of Patna in Bihar. It is most well known as the seat of the ancient university that attracted scholars from Asia and Greece.

Historical Significance

Nalanda University was established in the Gupta Era, time of liberal cultural traditions. It enjoyed patronage of both hindu and Buddhist kings. In 673 BC Chinese visitor YiJing stated that there were 8 colleges and 300 rooms at the University. In the Pala Era, as other learning Centres came up, Nalanda diminished in importance.

It was destroyed in 1193 by the Turkish invader Bakhtiyar Khilji, killing thousands of monks in an attempt to uproot Buddhism.

Nalanda Is Famous For Heritage And As A Centre Of Education

Nalanda’s claim to fame is the ancient University. Though now in ruins, it is a reminder of a rich and proud heritage. Columns of the libraries and meditation halls, remains of parks, classrooms and other structures can still be seen, and inspires awe in visitors.

Apart from regular subjects like Mathematics, Science and Philosophy,Nalanda was also a centre of Buddhist learning, and remains a sacred place for followers of Buddhism to this day.

Buddhist nations like Japan and China have pledged to help India rebuild the University and restore Nalanda’s glory.

Apart from the ruins of the University there are Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh shrines, which make it a pilgrimage destination for many.

Culture

Nalanda still retains an old world charm, with its ruins and ancient shrines and other monuments.

Climate And Best Time To Visit

Nalanda sees very hot climate during summers. However, it is relatively cooler during winters with medium rainfall during the monsoon months. The best time to visit this pilgrimage destination is from the month of October to March.
