A hill station in Raigarh, Maharashtra Matheran is a little jewel in the crown of Maharashtra’s tourism industry. It is located at an altitude of at an altitude of about 2,625 feet above sea level, on the Western Ghats range. It is one of the most beautiful hill stations consisting of 28 points, two lakes, two parks, four major worship places and a race course.
This nature loving place was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, district collector of Thane in May 1850, but the foundations of Matheran as a future hill station was laid down by Governor of Bombay, Lord Elphinstone. It is an amazing place to beat the heat in the summer.
Matheran has also been declared as the eco sensitive region by Union Environment Ministry and this is among the few places where private vehicles are not allowed, making it a quiet and peaceful place.

They can enjoy the real beauty of nature at this place.There are lots of lookout points that provide spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Matheran has a reasonably dense forest cover.

Though there are lots of Parsi bungalows in Matheran; the root culture is Marathi. People belonging to this place speak Marathi, Hindi and English. Majority of people are from Hindu and Muslim community. All the religious festivals are celebrated with equal enthusiasm.
Interestingly, roads in Matheran are not metallic; but, are made from red laterite earth. Also beautiful old British style architecture is preserved in Matheran.
Matheran is contributing reasonable revenue to the tourism of Mahrashtra which aids in the development of better infrastructural facilities for the tourists as well as local residents.
Matheran Municipal Council along with Bhabh atomic plant has laid the foundation of BARC NI sargruna biogas plant for processing of biodegradable waste generated in the premises of municipal council at Matheran. This waste is recycled and will add to the value of technology from environmental angle, thus making this place environment friendly and free of pollution.
Climate and best time to visit
Matheran lies in an elevated region, enjoys a cooler and less humid climate which makes it popular during the summer months. Temperatures range from 32 °C (90 °F) to 16 °C (61 °F). The best time for visiting the place is from October to May. People who love to go for rainy outings can go there in July and August.
