The city of Jaisalmer is named after its founder, Maharawal Jaisal Singh. When translated, the name Jaisalmer means, “the fort of Jaisal”. Most inhabitants of Jaisalmer, today, are descendants of Bhati Rajputs. This is because Jaisalmer was ruled by the Bhati Clan of Yadu. In the year 1293, the city was attacked and destroyed by Ala-ud-din Khilji. Then the Bhati clan separated and moved to different areas around Jaipur. It was only during the reign of Rawal Sahal Singh that the princes of Jaisalmer regained their power and continued to rule the region.
