Chandigarh is a city and a union territory in north India and also acts as the capital to Punjab and Haryana. The name literally means, ‘The Fort of Chandi’, referring to Goddess Chandi.

Historical Background

8000 years ago, Chandigarh was part of the Harappan civilization. Chandigarh holds the distinction of being the first planned Indian city. Jawaharlal Nehru decided to showcase the young nation’s futuristic outlook through this city. French architect Le Corbusier was entrusted with this task.

Chandigarh is famous as a Religious Centre, Business Hub and a Green City

There are several industries in Chandigarh; industries enjoy infrastructure and other support from the Government. The major industries are metals and alloys, machinery, auto parts, paper making, etc. The IT Park attracts IT professionals from all over India, as ample space and opportunities are available here. Many MNCs and Indian software giants have made their base here.

The Chandi Mandir, The Mata Mansa Devi, Shiva Temple of Saketri, and the many Gurudwaras, attract pilgrims in droves.

The city boasts of several plantations that host a variety of flora and fauna. A bird sanctuary, the Sukhna Lake, and the numerous parks, make Chandigarh a nature lover’s paradise. This unique combination of modernity and closeness to nature entices people from India and abroad.

Chandigarh’s Culture

Many people are employed in Government services. Owing to the lower taxation structure and the presence of many industries, Chandigarh is one of India’s wealthiest cities.

The city has separate sectors for everything like education, shopping and hospitals. Sector 17 is where most visitors head : myriad restaurants, art galleries, theatres, departmental stores, bars, discos, showrooms and the fountain in the ‘chowk’ keep visitors enchanted for hours.

In addition to Baisakhi and Teej, Chandigarh has its own festivals like The Chandigarh Carnival, Chrysanthemum Show, Mango Festival and Festival of Gardens.

Hindi, Punjabi and English are the commonly spoken languages.

Current Scenario

As Chandigarh was planned for a specific population Government is racing to expand the city and improve infrastructure in accordance with the rapidly growing population. Chandigarh is swiftly evolving into a regional centre for education, health, food &vegetable processing and service industries.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

Mid-August-November is the best time to visit Chandigarh as the weather is very pleasant then.
