Bhubaneshwar is the capital of Odisha state (formerly Orissa) with a history going back 3000 years. The name comes from Tribhubaneshwar, meaning Lord of the Three Worlds (Shiva).

Historical Significance

The first rulers of this city were the Mahamegha-bahana Chedi dynasty in the 2nd Century BC. It was the capital of the Kalinga Empire which is manifested in its rich architectural legacy. Though Cuttack was the original capital of Orissa, post independence, it was relocated to Bhubaneshwar.

Bhubaneshwar is famous as a Religious and Art and Culture Destination

The presence of several ancient (with splendid architecture) and some modern age temples makes Bubaneshwar a sacred place for Hindu pilgrims. It was also a centre of Buddhist faith and education in ancient times, and till today, remains a holy place for Buddhists.

There are also rock cut caves made by Jain monks in ancient times, which bring Jains to this city in thousands each year.

Basically a temple town, Oriya handicrafts and handloom fabrics, Odissi dance, sculpture, music and theatre are very popular.

Many cultural festivals like Kalinga Mahotsav, Dhauli Kalinga Mahotsav, Rajarani music festival and Mukteshwar Dance festival are conducted annually.

The Rath Yatra is an important event here, as are the Rukuna Rath, Shivaratri, Durga Puja, Huakhia, Ganesh Chaturthi And Saraswati Puja festivals.

Rice and fish curry are staples. Roshogolla and Chenajhilli are the famous sweets.Street foods like gupchup, bara-ghughuni are extremely popular.
