It is the Union Territory of India, located in the Indian Ocean, in the southern reaches of the Bay of Bengal. It is comprised of two island groups: Andaman and Nicobar, which separate the Andaman Sea to the east from the Indian Ocean.

The territory’s capital town is Port Blair and the capital of Nicobar Islands is Malacca.

Historical background

The history of these islands revolves around three periods: the British regime, the Japanese regime and the post Independence period.

The British settlement was founded here in 1789 on Port Blair under the influence of Lord Cornwalis, the then General Governor of India. After the great revolt of 1857, the britishers established a penal settlement here to keep the prisoners of Indian Army. The settlement was established in 1858.

During the World War II, Japanese established their control on Andaman Islands in 1942. They have done much rehabilitation in the area like building of roads. They were cordial to people. In December 1943, Indian flag was hosted here by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands – a tourist spot, honeymoon destination

These islands are slowly becoming a favorite spot for honeymoon couples. The exotic beauty of the beaches attracts them. The place is also famous for its museums and monuments.

For adventure loving people, scuba diving is one of the major attractions for the tourists.

Apart from this, flora and fauna of this place attracts lot of tourists from different parts of the world. The cellular Jail constructed by Britishers is a perfect example of British architecture which is a must to see.


The majority of the population is Hindus, but a significant population of Sikhs, Muslim and Christians also live here. All the religious festivals are celebrated with equal enthusiasm by all. Various tribes are also the aborigines of Andaman Islands. They are the Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas and Sentinelese.

The languages which are mostly spoken here are Bengali, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. The official language for trading is Andaman Creole Hindi.

Current Scenario

There are at present 1,374 registered small scale and handicrafts units in this territory. There are SSI units engaged in the production of polythene bags, PVC pipes and fibre glass. The State Government is taking initiative to improve the industrialization scenario of the territory.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation has also made improvements and progress in the field of tourism, fisheries, industries and industrial financing. They also function as an authorized agent for Alliance Air/Jet Airways.

The Andaman and Nicobar islands experience a tropical climate with minor fluctuations in temperature. The best time to visit this place is from October – May.
